AMD CEO Lisa Su forecasts growth in the PC market in the second half of the year
AMD CEO Lisa Su recently stated that she anticipates the PC market to experience seasonal growth in the second half of the year, accompanied by improved inventory levels across the supply chain. Despite a decline in second-quarter revenue compared to the previous year, AMD achieved success by launching several new products during this period, despite the overall economic downturn. While PC client and data center segment growth offset expected declines in the gaming and embedded segments, AI customer engagements saw significant growth.
AMD's success in the AI market
According to Lisa Su, AI customer engagements grew substantially in the second quarter, particularly in relation to the Instinct MI250 and MI300 hardware and software. These positive developments reflect the increasing interest in data center AI solutions. AMD's AI strategy is threefold: delivering a wide range of leadership GPUs, CPUs, and adaptive computing solutions for AI inferencing and training; expanding the open and proven software platform for AI hardware deployment; and fostering collaborative partnerships across the ecosystem to accelerate the implementation of AMD-based AI solutions at scale. Lisa Su affirmed that AMD successfully executed on all three fronts in the second quarter.
Advancements in hardware
AMD's hardware achievements in the second quarter include the announcement of the Instinct MI300X GPUs, which are designed to be the most advanced accelerators for generative AI. Combining the next-generation CDNA 3 architecture with the industry's largest memory footprint and fastest memory bandwidth, the MI300X GPUs offer exceptional AI inferencing performance. Customer interest in these GPUs is high, and they are expected to ship in the fourth quarter of this year. In terms of PCs, AMD expects growth in the client segment during the stronger second half of the year, fueled by the strength of their product portfolio and increased adoption of the Ryzen 7000 CPUs, including the Ryzen 7040 mobile CPUs.
A bright future for AI and gaming graphics
Looking ahead, Lisa Su identifies AI as a significant driver of PC demand. Major software providers, including Microsoft, are incorporating generative AI into their offerings, which is expected to further fuel the growth of AI in the PC market. AMD has developed a multi-generational Ryzen AI processor roadmap in collaboration with ecosystem partners, which is set to revolutionize the PC experience. In gaming graphics, AMD expanded its Radeon 7000 GPU series in the second quarter and plans to launch new enthusiast-class Radeon 7000 series cards in the third quarter. These developments demonstrate AMD's commitment to continuous innovation in the gaming industry.
Opportunities and challenges in the data center market
Regarding the data center market, Lisa Su acknowledges a mixed environment. While AI deployments are expanding, cloud customers are optimizing their data center compute, and enterprise customers remain cautious about new deployments. Nonetheless, AMD expects strong growth driven by increased sales of 4th Gen EPYC and Ryzen 7000 processors, as well as initial shipments of the Instinct MI300 accelerators. Looking towards the future, Lisa Su emphasizes that AI represents a multi-billion dollar growth opportunity for AMD across cloud, edge computing, and various intelligent endpoints. It is anticipated that the market for AI accelerators in the data center alone will exceed $150 billion by 2027.
Conclusion
AMD's CEO Lisa Su remains optimistic about the company's future growth prospects, particularly in the PC market and AI sector. The company's strong performance in the second quarter, despite challenging economic conditions, demonstrates their ability to adapt and succeed through innovation. With a robust product portfolio, strategic partnerships, and a focus on AI advancements, AMD is well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the technology industry.
